Major Drum

Location of Photograph:

El Cajon, California

What the photographer likes about the image:

I like the way several elements come together in this image to form a visual experience. The colors of the uniforms compliment the sky, just as the feathers on the hats mirror the clouds. Because nearly everything in the image is blue, the reflected image has no color competition. In a way it reflects the band, where everyone has to work together for the good of the whole. Flags are always exciting and here they show the wind, adding texture and motion as a way of relating viscerally to the marching band.

Techniques Used:

The band was on the move and I was walking along with them. I had to work quickly to get the image and then get out of the way.

Things to notice:

Reflections are often fun to work with in a photography, because they offer a view usually unavailable to the naked eye. The circular design element of the drum, the low angle from which the photo was taken and the clear sharp optics of the camera combine with the subject to form an image capturing the energy of the parade.
